Neck Lift (Platysmaplasty)

The neck can begin to show age faster than whole face and many times patients only need a neck lift, rather than a full face lift. Aging does not always determine the need for a neck lift, but rather having lost considerable weight or it may even be hereditary. Many patients choose to have a neck lift with their face lift procedure.

What can I expect from a Neck Lift?
Your expectations need to be realistic. Most patients are pleased with the outcome and find they gain a feeling of increased self-confidence especially when wearing can those more revealing clothes. The overall achievement will be having a completely natural look that gives the impressions you have lost weight and/or look younger.

Recovery after Neck Lift (Platysmaplasty) Procedure

What will happen in the recovery period?
You will feel tired and sore for a few days and will have swelling and bruising which is only natural. Most of your discomfort will be subsided with prescription medication. Following the operation you will have a light dressing in place which will need to be kept dry for 2 weeks. After 2 weeks your dressing will be removed and the wound inspected and lightly cleaned. The scars will be firm and pink for at least six weeks and may remain the same size for several months and it is important to keep in mind that they may take up to 2 years to fade. You will have follow-up visits in the months after surgery to check on your progress.

What is the recovery time from Platysmaplasty surgery?
This will depend on the individual patient however most patients are able to go back to work after a couple weeks. Although you can walk about and do very light activities in a few days it is advisable not to do anything strenuous for 21 days. The average recovery time is between 3-4 weeks.

For people with loose sagging skin under the chin, vertical bands in the neck, "turkey wattles" or necks that are too heavy, neck lift surgery - either alone or in combination with other cosmetic procedures - can produce very gratifying results.

The quality of the result will depend upon the elasticity of the neck skin and degree of sun damage to the area. Naturally, it is important to have realistic expectations, but fortunately current techniques allow for an elaborate and detailed restitution of a youthful contouring the neck, that can benefit patients with a variety of problems.

In general terms, people whose relatives have strong jaws and chins, maintain a more defined appearance of the neck later in life. For those who have inherited a relatively small chin, a combination of neck lift and chin augmentation can produce dramatic improvements for the facial balance and neck contours.

I had a platysmaplasty and cervicplasty--the full neck lift almost a month ago. There was no fat in the submental area just loose skin. The total procedure with operating room and anesthesia cost $10,000. At this point the submental area, under the chin is a hard mass looking like a double chin which I never had. Will this improve with massage. Or is this a failed procedure. the pre-opt photos were an exageration. Will I improve or is this a deception of a deceptive plastic surgeon?

I just wrote a post about having platysmaplasty and cervicplasty, full-neck life. Pre-op I had only loose skin under my chin. Now I have a hard bulge that looks like a double chin. Will this improve with massage or is this a failure. deception or complication. Do I have any recourse for this bad outcome or will it improve with massage and time?

hey, you don't need to worry much if these are the case.

Neck and Jaws may be bruised and continue to swell (persistent edema) for up to 15 days, sometimes up to 3 weeks or more after platysmaplasty . Other risks includes skin contour irregularities, skin discoloration and numbness to the skin. It will improve with massage and time.

I don't believe it as a failed procedure but If it's hard then I'd better suggest you to consult with your surgeon about this case cause there may be some risks of infection. I hope you had chose board-certified plastic surgeon from the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

Thank you.
